“ORGANIC FARMING”- WHAT & WHY…????
-Arunava Deb
ORGANIC FARMING- It is a technique of farming where cultivation is done in natural way. In this method Tradition, Science & Innovation are combined together to minimise the negative impact on environment & human health. Basically it is the combination of the farming technique that our ancestors used many years ago & modern agriculture science.
It depends upon few basics of agriculture such as crop rotation, bio pesticide, organic manure, compost & vermicompost etc.
KEY POINTS OF ORGANIC FARMING
1. HEALTH- Here the word health is not only indicating the human health, rather it is indicating the health of soil, plants, animals & humans all together. It is more focused on the overall health of Biodiversity & Ecosystem.
2. FAIRNESS- Fairness means doing justice to every living being & also to ensure the better future for upcoming generations.
3. ECOLOGICAL BALANCE- It should not harm any living being & should not have any negative impact on environment.
ULTIMATE GOAL OF ORGANIC FARMING
SUSTAINABILITY- Organic farming mainly aims at the sustainable agriculture technique which means the lesser exploitation & minimum use of resources while ensuring maximum output for a longer period of time. This also protects the beauty of nature.
WHY ORGANIC FARMING…???
- BETTER NUTRITION- Vitamin & mineral content of organic foods are more which indicates the higher nutrition value of organic food items.
- LONGER SHELF LIFE- Organic foods have longer shelf life which means you can store them for a longer period of time before consumption.
- FREE FROM HARMFUL CHEMICALS- Organic food eliminates the toxic effect of chemical as no chemical fertilisers & pesticides are used during production.
- INEXPENSIVE- The input cost is less for organic farming. So, it is easy for the poor farmers to opt for this with less capital.
- HIGHER PROFIT- The input cost might be less, but the price at which organic products are sold are much higher compared to inorganic products. So, the profit is more in case of organic farming.
- ZERO POLLUTION- no chemical is used in this. As a result it ensure the zero pollution or environmental degradation.
- SOIL QUALITY- It not only reduces soil pollution but also helps to improve the physical & chemical properties of soil with the help of crop rotation & nitrogen fixation in soil.
- ANIMAL HEALTH- Chemicals disturbs the life cycle of beneficial insects & other living organisms while organic farming helps to maintain the proper life cycle of those beneficial insects.
- DISEASE TOLERANCE- Only the crops which are suitable for any particular area are used for cultivation which minimises the chance of loss due to pests & diseases.
- NO NEED OF PURCHASING SEEDS- Now a days packaged seeds are available in the market which you can use for plantation, but once you get the fruit you can’t use the seeds of that for further plantation. But in organic cultivation you can collect the seeds from fruits & use it for plantation again.
